Thor Rumored To Battle an Unexpected Avenger in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

Thor may be throwing down with one of his fellow Avengers in Avengers: Doomsday, but if this new rumor is accurate, it won’t be the Doctor Strange we know.

According to Marvel insider James Mack, Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder will reportedly battle a Doctor Strange variant named Boris in the upcoming MCU event movie. This version of Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer is also said to be working alongside Doctor Doom.

The rumor claims Boris will serve as Doom’s sidekick and wield a sling ring, effectively making him a sorcerer connected to Victor von Doom.

That’s a major departure from the Boris of Marvel Comics, who is a longtime servant, confidant, caretaker, and advisor to Doom in Latveria. The comic book character doesn’t have supernatural abilities, so Doomsday could be taking the name and relationship to Doom in a completely different direction.

The Thor fight is certainly an intriguing piece of this puzzle. We’ve seen Thor battle other heroes before, but putting him against a Doctor Strange variant with an unknown agenda could make for one of the movie’s more unusual matchups.

It also raises some questions about why this Strange is helping Doom and what Thor discovers during their confrontation.

According to the report, those answers won’t arrive until the third act. Boris will supposedly reveal who he really is and explain his intentions during a conversation with Steve Rogers, with the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness playing an important role in the explanation.

There has also been a previously leaked image making the rounds that allegedly shows Boris wearing a Latverian-style mask with an opening for a third eye.

That detail brings to mind the ending of Multiverse of Madness, where Strange develops a third eye after using the Darkhold. If the image and this new report are connected, Marvel could be building a very different path for Cumberbatch’s character.

Of course, none of this has been confirmed by Marvel Studios. Still, the idea of a Doctor Strange variant assuming the role of Boris is weird enough to be interesting, especially if Marvel is using the Multiverse to remix familiar comic book characters rather than simply introducing alternate versions of the heroes we already know.

Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and will bring the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four into a massive multiversal conflict. The three groups will reportedly find themselves facing a brutal choice as their universes collide and they are fighting to protect their own realities or find some way to save them all.

If Thor really does end up battling this mysterious Doctor Strange variant, it sounds like Doom may have found himself one hell of a dangerous ally.
