Will STAR WARS: MAUL – SHADOW LORD Finally Reveal Maul’s Real Name
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantIf you’ve ever gone down a rabbit hole wondering what Star Wars villain Maul’s actual last name might be, you’re definitely not alone. It’s one of those oddly specific mysteries that some fans love to obsess over.
Now, thanks toStar Wars: Maul – Shadow Lordstar Sam Witwer, it sounds like we might actually be getting closer to an answer.
The conversation kicked off in a pretty fun way. A fan posted a drawing on X imagining Maul tending bar at a place called “Opress Brothers Bar,” which naturally led to speculation about his full name. Witwer jumped in and stirred the pot with this comment:
"Holy crap. Wait... Is Maul's last name Opress??? Maul Opress? If they're blood brothers, I don't see why not. Or is it Maul Talzin?"
That one response has fans spinning theories again. We already know Maul has a brother, Savage Opress, who was introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and became a major part of Maul’s story.
Both of them are tied to Mother Talzin, the powerful Nightsister leader from Dathomir. But here’s where things get murky. While they share the same mother, the identity of their father has never been revealed in canon.
What we do know is that Maul’s father was a Dathomirian Nightbrother. Savage’s father also hasn’t been named, which leaves the door wide open.
If they do share the same father, “Opress” could actually be a family name. On the flip side, Maul could have taken on his mother’s name, making “Talzin” just as plausible.
This is exactly the kind of deep-cut lore that Maul – Shadow Lord seems eager to explore. The animated series is already digging deeper into Maul’s psyche and history than we’ve ever seen before.
According to executive producer Athena Yvette Portillo, the show takes things further than previous appearances, saying it "is a whole 'nother level of character depth" for Witwer's Maul, "where you get to go into his mental psyche."
The aligns with what we’ve seen so far. Just a few episodes in, the series is expanding Maul’s story in some pretty compelling ways. We’re getting more insight into the Shadow Collective, his place in the galaxy after the fall of the Sith, and even meeting new characters like a Twi’lek Jedi Padawan named Devon Izara.
Whether his name turns out to be Maul Opress, Maul Talzin, or something completely different, it’s clear the show is peeling back layers of a character who’s always been more complex than he first appeared.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is currently streaming weekly on Disney+.
