UNIOSUN secures $60,000 grant for mosquito research

Osun State University, UNIOSUN, has secured a US$60,000 research grant from the US Naval Medical Research Unit 3 (NAMRU-3) to support mosquito surveillance and research activities in selected states across Nigeria.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, said the grant was won by Dr Dapo Adeogun of the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology.

Adesoji said Adeogun secured the grant with support from other vector experts in the department, adding that the project would focus on strengthening mosquito surveillance across participating locations.

According to the statement, “the research would generate scientific data to support efforts aimed at controlling vector-borne diseases in Nigeria.”

The university said the project would contribute to a better understanding of mosquito populations and provide data that could assist public health efforts targeting diseases transmitted by vectors.

The statement said the Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, congratulated Adeogun and other members of the research team on securing the international research grant.

Adebooye commended the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology for its commitment to research and academic activities addressing public health and societal challenges.

The vice-chancellor said the grant would further strengthen the university’s research profile and visibility, while encouraging members of the university community to pursue competitive research funding opportunities.

He urged researchers within the institution to continue seeking local and international grants capable of supporting studies that address pressing challenges in society.

The university management said the latest award adds to UNIOSUN’s growing portfolio of externally funded research projects in different areas of academic and scientific research.

It said the grant also reflects the institution’s commitment to research that addresses critical public health challenges, particularly through the generation of scientific evidence.

The management described the achievement as further evidence of UNIOSUN’s growing profile as a research-driven institution with increasing international visibility.
