Gov Yusuf orders immediate regulation of sand mining near Kano water plants
by Hadiza Musa · Daily PostGovernor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has directed the Ministry of Water Resources to take immediate action to regulate sand mining activities around water treatment plants in the state.
The directive was issued on Tuesday during an inspection visit to the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant as part of his ongoing statewide tour of water facilities.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the move is aimed at protecting critical water infrastructure and ensuring a steady supply of clean water to residents.
Governor Yusuf expressed concern over the growing activities of sand miners around water treatment facilities, warning that such practices could affect water production and distribution.
“Unregulated sand mining poses a serious threat to the smooth operation of our water treatment plants,” the governor said. “We must act quickly to protect these facilities for the benefit of our people.”
He directed the ministry to strengthen monitoring and enforcement measures to ensure that sand mining does not damage water sources or interfere with treatment processes.
Yusuf also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving access to potable water across Kano State, urging stakeholders to cooperate with government efforts to safeguard public utilities.
“We remain committed to providing clean and safe water to our citizens, and this can only be achieved if we protect the systems that make it possible,” he added.
