UNICAL raises alarm over fake ‘Professor’ demanding money from students

The University of Calabar, UNICAL, has raised the alarm over an alleged impostor posing as a professor and demanding money from students in exchange for purported assistance with their examination results.

The university said the suspect, who identifies himself as “Prof. Odong,” claims to be a staff member of its Information and Communication Technology, ICT, unit.

According to UNICAL, the individual contacts students, tells them that their examination results are poor and demands payment to help improve or facilitate their results.

The university said the suspect has been using telephone number 08144115929 for the alleged scheme.

It added that preliminary investigation by its Security Department established that there was no staff member known as Prof. Odong at the university.

Further checks, according to the institution, indicated that the individual was operating from Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State.

UNICAL therefore advised students to ignore any communication from the alleged impostor and not to pay money to anyone claiming to have the ability to alter or improve their examination results.

The university also warned students against disclosing personal information or examination details to such persons.

Students who may have been contacted by the suspect were urged to report the matter to the appropriate university authorities for further action.

The university said it would sanction anyone found culpable of unethical practices involving its academic processes.
