Water reached 1,005 water bodies through Athikadavu-Avinashi project: Minister Muthusamy

Minister for Housing and Urban Development, S. Muthusamy, said that under the Athikadavu-Avinashi project, water has reached 1,005 water bodies, and steps are being taken to ensure it reaches the remaining 40 water bodies.

The Minister, in the presence of Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara, chaired a meeting with officials to review various development works being carried out in the district at the Collectorate on Thursday.

Addressing the officials, he said the scheme was inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on August 17, 2024, to fill 1,045 water bodies across three districts. The project allowed a maximum draw of 250 cusecs, with an aim to provide 1,500 million cusecs of water annually to fill water bodies. “Of the 1,045 waterbodies, water has already reached 1,005, and efforts are under way to ensure it reaches the remaining 40,” he added.

The Minister emphasised that steps were being taken to utilise the entire surplus water from Bhavani River. He directed officials to inspect water bodies where only a low quantity of water was reaching and urged the formation of village-level committees for effective monitoring.

R. Sadheesh, Additional Collector (Development) and Project Director, District Rural Development Agency, N. Manish, Corporation Commissioner, S. Santhakumar, District Revenue Officer, S. Sivanandham, Sub Collector, Gobichettipalayam, Thirumalai Kumar, Superintending Engineer of the project, department heads and engineers were present at the meeting.
