NIN scientist gets patent for innovative menopause care formulation
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduNational Institute of Nutrition (NIN) researcher Vandana Singh has been granted a patent for developing a innovative menopause-care formulation using an indigenous grass species as the key ingredient.
An ayurvedic clinician, Dr. Vandana had developed a Non-Hormonal Therapy (NHT) formulation based on her clinical experience and ancient Sanskrit literature and principles. She collaborated with former scientist and pharmacologist and Dinesh Kumar, a press release said on Thursday (December 26).
Dr. Vandana’s Herbal Alternative Therapies addressed a need for alternatives to treatments such as Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) in the backdrop of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advising restrictions on long-term HRT use.
According to the press release, the patented formulation follows Ayurvedic principles, and the research involved plant species identification, quality standards, proof of concept, regulatory compliance and prototype formulation. The formulation aims to improve the quality of life of women after menopause.
The release said the work has been shortlisted for the Alice and Albert Netter Prize 2023 by the European Society of Gynaecology.
