Mechanised sewer cleaning: PWD’s move to keep waterlogging at bay

by · The Hindu

A trial of a recycler machine was conducted in south Delhi’s Greater Kailash area on Sunday to address the waterlogging issue in the city before the monsoon and modernise the sewer cleaning system.

PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the machine, previously used in Mumbai, is being trialed in Delhi and that it enables thorough sewer cleaning without manual entry.

Addressing reporters, Mr. Singh said, “Most drains and sewer lines have not been desilted for the past 10-20 years. As a result, every rainfall leads to waterlogging on roads. Our effort now is to have such state-of-the-art machines in every Assembly constituency to ensure thorough cleaning.”

He said CCTV cameras will be used to verify 100% cleanliness during desilting operations, ensuring that the process doesn’t remain just on paper.
