Coimbatore Corporation begins temporary restoration of dug-up roads amid rain
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe Coimbatore Corporation has begun temporary restoration of roads dug up for underground drainage (UGD) and drinking water supply projects in various parts of the city.
The city received moderate rainfall over the past two days, turning several stretches into non-motorable zones. Roads that were dug for UGD works and left unrestored were affected by waterlogging, resulting in disruption to vehicle movement.
According to the Corporation, roads in Wards 1, 3, 4, 5, 10, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 34, 38, 39, 40, 42, 44, 56, 57 and 69 were damaged due to UGD works. Drinking water supply projects were also under way in 60 wards, contributing to further digging across the city.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran inspected the affected sites and instructed officials to take immediate steps to make the roads motorable.
“Interior streets were dug up along the centre for pipe laying. After closing the trenches, we reopened the roads (for vehicle movement), but the rain has caused problems. We have received several complaints about vehicles getting stuck and roads turning mushy, and have started temporary restoration by filling the stretches with gravel sand, and earthmovers are working round the clock to level the surface. Once the rains stop, we will start laying tar-topped roads,” said a senior Corporation official.
