A 23-year-old youth was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Amayalthotti under the Kothamangalam forest division in Idukki around 3.30 pm. on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Mullaringadu resident Amar Ilahi.

According to local people, the youth was attacked by the elephant while he and his friend had gone to a nearby field to bring back a cow that was left to graze there. His friend fled and narrowly escaped the elephant attack. Amar was rushed to the Thodupuzha taluk hospital, but his life could not be saved.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) have called a hartal in the Vannappuram panchayat from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday in protest against the recurrent wild elephant incursions in the region.

Local people alleged that for the past several weeks, wild elephants had been posing a threat to people. Forest department officials said the incident occurred inside a reserve forest area.
