GCC to install two new pillar clocks in T. Nagar
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe Greater Chennai Corporation will install two four-faced pillar clocks at G.N. Chetty Road and Thiyagaraya Road Pedestrian Plaza under the Namakku Naame Thittam Scheme.
An official said, “The design includes a musical bell with Thirukkural recitation through a machine at 8 a.m. every day through an amplifier and two horns. The design is a blend of modern and antique elements.”
The pillar clock will feature a 3-foot diameter dial, a 12-foot mild steel pipes pillar, and components including an electronic control unit, and a 12-volt backup battery, as per the tender document.
According to the official, “Timekeepers and maintenance will be assigned under the scheme. The work, which is yet to begin, will be contracted to a firm that has already been involved in making such elements.”
Further, a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment plant will be set up at ₹2.5 lakh, to provide potable water to the public. It will clean water extracted from a borewell on Thiyagaraya Road on the pedestrian plaza. The total estimated value for the combined works to improve the T. Nagar area is ₹9.9 lakh, the official said.
