Kauvery Hospital has performed a combination procedure involving the latest generation leadless pacemaker and non-surgical valve replacement on an 80-year-old patient.

According to a press release, the patient had multiple health issues including diabetes, lung problems, chronic kidney disease and a history of bypass surgery for heart disease. These non-surgical percutaneous procedures addressed both age-related slow heart rate and aortic valve stenosis problems of the patient.

A team at the hospital performed leadless pacemaker implantation along with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) through two small keyhole incisions in the right leg. This pacemaker is a small, self-contained device implanted directly into the heart to help regulate its rhythm, and is inserted through a minimally invasive procedure from the groin, doing away with the need for leads inside the heart or any scar in the chest wall.

Deep Chandh Raja S., director of Cardiac Electrophysiology at the hospital, performed the leadless pacemaker implantation and Rajaram Ananthraman, clinical lead, Advanced Heart Failure, Cardiomyopathy and Transplantation, performed the TAVR procedure along with a team of cardiac anaesthetists.
