Town centre street flooded as pavement and shopping centre entrance taped off

by · Manchester Evening News

Parts of Bury town centre have been taped off following a major leak. An area of Market Street is flooded following a burst water pipe this morning (November 16).

A section has been taped off and pedestrians are being advised to avoid the area, with the entrance to Millgate shopping centre closed off at Kay Gardens. United Utilities says it is aware of the issue and engineers will soon be working to fix it.

A Bury Council spokesperson wrote on X: "There’s a large water leak in Bury town centre on Market St junction with Market Place. The area Is currently taped off and the entrance to Millgate shopping centre at Kay Gardens is closed.

"United Utilities have been notified about the incident to carry out repairs." Video footage from the scene shows a large amount of water on the road and the pavement taped off outside The Bank pub, on Market Street.

Eyewitnesses have also reported a 'sinkhole' in the area, near to the mini-roundabout at Bolton Street. United Utilities says some people in the surrounding area could be affected by water pressure issues before the problem is fixed.

An update on the company's website says: "We’re sorry if you’re experiencing no water or low water pressure right now. A burst has been reported to us on Market Street and we can confirm this is the cause of the problem.

"We're on with it and our team will be in the area as soon as possible to get this fixed. Thank you for your patience."
