Rabbi Tzemach and Rivkah Gansburg (née Fraenkel) are joining as shluchim to serve students and the Jewish community in Marseille’s 5th arrondissement. They are joined by their children: Menahem Mendel Hillel, Israel Noah, and Amram Tzvi.

Rabbi Tzemach and Rivkah Gansburg have arrived in Marseille’s 5th arrondissement as new shluchim, establishing a Chabad presence dedicated to serving Jewish university students and the broader local community.

Located in the south of France, Marseille is one of the country’s largest cities and home to one of Europe’s oldest and most vibrant Jewish communities. The city also holds a unique connection to Chabad history, as the Rebbe once passed through Marseille during his journey to the United States, leaving a meaningful historical link to the city.

The 5th arrondissement of Marseille is considered one of the city’s main academic hubs. It is home to several of Marseille’s largest university faculties, particularly in medicine and health sciences, attracting thousands of students every year. The neighborhood is also home to one of the largest hospitals in southern France, where many medical professionals and students study and work, including a significant number of Jewish students and doctors.

In recent years, the number of Jewish students in Marseille’s universities has continued to grow, creating a strong need for a warm and welcoming place where young Jews can gather, connect to their identity, and build community.

Recognizing this opportunity, Rabbi Tzemach and Rivkah Gansburg, the new shluchim, have begun establishing a Chabad presence in this vibrant university district.

Through a developing Chabad on Campus initiative, Rabbi Tzemach and Rivkah Gansburg plan to offer students a welcoming place to connect with Jewish life. Programs will include Shabbat meals, weekday lunches for students, Torah classes, holiday events, and social gatherings, creating a warm and supportive environment throughout the academic year.

“Our goal is to create a place where every Jewish student can feel at home, connect with their roots, and discover the beauty of Judaism in a warm and welcoming atmosphere,” said Rabbi Tzemach Gansburg.

At the same time, the new shluchim will also serve the broader Jewish community in the area, offering opportunities for learning, guidance, and community engagement in the welcoming spirit of Chabad.

This new chapter follows two years of service by Rabbi Tzemach and Rivkah Gansburg in Dubai, where they were involved in strengthening Jewish life and supporting the growing Jewish community there.

Now in Marseille, Rabbi Tzemach and Rivkah Gansburg look forward to building a vibrant center of Jewish life for students and residents alike, bringing warmth, inspiration, and community to the heart of Marseille’s university district.

The new shluchim in Marseille operate under the guidance of Rav YY Labkowski, continuing the Rebbe’s vision of reaching every Jew with warmth, friendship, and connection to Torah.
