RM29.4 mln proposed for repairs along 10.9km of Bintulu-Bakun route
by Yunus Yussop · Borneo Post OnlineBINTULU (Sept 22): An estimated 10.9 kilometres along the federal Bintulu-Bakun route, or FT803, have been identified for proposed repair works estimated to cost RM29.4 million, said Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said the proposal had yet to be approved but involved several sections that required attention based on their current road conditions and damage extent.
“In every road inspection, it is important for us to look at two things, what has been successfully completed and what still needs attention.
“Follow-up action is needed, with priorities to be determined based on actual site conditions, the severity of damage, and the importance of each section to road users,” he said after inspecting several completed repair works along the 128.46km route here.
Nanta said FT803 continued to face challenges arising from the use of heavy vehicles along the route.
“The Works Ministry previously identified overloaded vehicles as among the factors that could accelerate pavement deterioration along the Bintulu-Bakun route.
“However, heavy vehicles still need to use this route to sustain economic activities in the area, which also involve the local community,” he said.
He said efforts should not stop at repairing damaged roads, but must also include monitoring the condition of repaired sections and addressing factors contributing to faster deterioration.
“The ultimate goal remains the same to ensure FT803 users enjoy safer, more comfortable and smoother journeys.”
Also present were Works Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim and Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) director Datu Cassidy Morris.
