Sarawak Delta Geopark to gain Unesco Global Geopark status this month
by Jude Toyat · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (April 11): The Sarawak Delta Geopark will be officially recognised as a Unesco Global Geopark on April 23 in Paris, with the certificate presentation scheduled for April 27, Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh has disclosed.
He said the recognition marks a significant achievement for Sarawak in strengthening its environmental conservation agenda and sustainable development framework.
“Sarawak Delta Geopark, which also covers the area where we are currently gathered, will be recognised by Unesco in Paris on the 23rd of this month, InsyaAllah, and the certificate will be presented on April 27 in Paris,” he said.
Len Talif said this in his speech during the Majlis Penyampaian Watikah Pelantikan Renjer Komuniti and flag-off of Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK), as well as the ‘1000 Visits to Save Wildlife’ programme held at Dewan Kampung Semeba here on Saturday.
He said the recognition reflects strong cooperation between the state and federal governments in advancing environmental protection and ensuring sustainable development benefits all communities.
“This shows the commitment of both the state and federal governments to ensure that every step we take prioritises environmental sustainability and benefits the people as a whole,” he said.
He added that the geopark initiative is based on three key pillars—community involvement, economic development and environmental sustainability.
“The main objective is to involve the community, the economy and environmental sustainability,” he added.
