Jobless man in Miri fined RM2,300 for drug abuse

MIRI (Sept 24): A 37-year-old jobless man was fined RM2,300 in default four months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court here today for drug abuse two months ago.

Magistrate Randu Rangen imposed the fine on Sheikh Shyaif Ariffin Mohamad after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act.

The Section carries a jail sentence of up to two years, or a fine not exceeding RM5,000, and immediate supervision for a period not exceeding three years, upon conviction.

The court also ordered the accused to undergo supervision for two years.

According to the facts of the case, the accused was tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, which are listed in the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, at the Miri District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department at 8.20pm on July 17 this year.

Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented by legal counsel.
