Miri man jailed seven months for drug possession

MIRI (Sept 24): A 21-year-old man was sentenced to seven months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court here today after he pleaded guilty to drug possession.

Magistrate Randu Rangen meted out the sentence against Hudson Luhat Wan of Kampung Bidayuh, Ulu Sungai Dalam in Taman Tunku here, after taking into consideration the accused’s plea, the facts the case, public interest, as well as a recommendation from Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He also ordered for the sentence to run from the date of Hudson’s arrest, which was on July 11 this year.

Hudson was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, which carries a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment up to five years, or both, upon conviction.

Based on the facts of the case, Hudson was found to be in possession of Methamphetamine weighing 0.20g in the living room of his house at around 2.30pm on July 11 this year.

In mitigation, Hudson pleaded for leniency and requested that the sentence run from the date of his arrest.

Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented by a legal counsel.
