SIBU (Nov 26): SJKC Kiang Hin held a mental health talk programme today to raise awareness among its students on the importance of maintaining mental health from a young age.

Held in the school’s multipurpose hall, the programme was jointly organised by SJKC Kiang Hin’s Board of Management, Sibu Hospital, Pasar Teku neighbourhood committee (KRT), and Sibu Mental Health Association.

Sibu Hospital’s head of psychiatry and mental health department Dr Wong Siong Teck delivered the talk, which touched on topics such as what mental health is, signs of someone who could be experiencing mental health issues, and how to maintain good mental health.

“Mental health is an important aspect that is often overlooked in our daily lives. Good mental health enables us to cope with stress, build positive relationships, and make wise decisions,” said the school’s headmaster Ling Ing Kiong.

In his speech, he encouraged the pupils to be brave in sharing their feelings with their families or friends, as well as to seek help if facing stress.

“Sharing problems could sometimes lighten the burden we carry, and a healthy lifestyle contributes to our emotional and mental balance,” he said.

Also speaking at the event was guest of honour, Sibu Division Unity officer Jendri Mangku, who expressed hope that such a programme would continue in the future.

“Our children are the future leaders of our nation, thus we should shape them into individuals who are mentally healthy,” she said.

Also present was SJKC Kiang Hin’s Board of Management chairman Kapitan So Teck Kee, who is also chairman of KRT Teku Market and Sibu Mental Health Association.
