SIBU (Dec 18): Access to essential healthcare was brought closer to rural residents when more than 300 people turned up for a Free Health Screening Community Service Programme held at the Kampung Tanjung Bundong Community Hall in Tanjong Manis last weekend.

The initiative was organised by Tanjong Manis Parliamentary Service Centre in collaboration with the Lions Club of Seduan Sibu and Rejang Medical Centre, with participants coming from Muara Bunut, Kampung Tanjung Bundong, Sungai Sian, Nangga Bangkit, Selidap and surrounding areas.

A total of 14 specialist doctors from Rejang Medical Centre, Oya Clinic and Sibu Hospital were present to provide free medical screening services to the rural community.

Tanjong Manis MP Dato Ir Yusuf Abdul Wahab, who was present, said the participation of specialist doctors provided residents in remote areas with valuable access to health screenings and professional medical advice at no cost.

He said such programmes play an essential role in raising awareness on the importance of early health screening to detect illnesses before they become more serious and difficult to treat.

“This health screening programme is the fourth in a series organised within the Tanjong Manis parliamentary constituency, as part of ongoing efforts to engage with the people, especially those living in remote areas.

“The organisation of this programme reflects a continuous commitment to ensuring healthcare services are accessible to all segments of society,” he said.

Services provided during the programme included eye tests, ear, nose and throat (ENT) screening, bone examinations, child health services, women’s health services, general surgery consultations, as well as blood and glucose level tests.

In addition, 100 pairs of free spectacles were distributed to eligible participants, while 100 food baskets were also given to those in need.

Meanwhile, a separate community programme featuring a tree-planting activity and the establishment of a Reading Corner at the veranda of Rumah Panjang Bisa Melintang was also carried out, aimed at promoting environmental awareness and cultivating reading interest among the rural community.

Also present at the initiative were Lions Club of Seduan Sibu president Lu Sii Yew, organising chairman Rosely Phua, Rejang Medical Centre representative Annette Hu, Penghulu Abas Banyi, representatives from government agencies, and community leaders and village heads.
