MBKS launches ‘Name Our Spaces’ contest for new water fun park, gastronomy centre
by Lim How Pim · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Dec 29): Sarawakians are invited to propose meaningful and suitable names for the various spaces of a new gastronomy centre and water fun park complex in the city.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng encouraged the public to participate in the Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) ‘Name Our Spaces’ contest.
“This contest is a public naming initiative that invites the community to take part in shaping the identity of one of our upcoming landmark developments,” he said during a news conference at the MBKS Complex.
The contest is held in tandem with MBKS’ efforts to upgrade the swimming pool area into a new gastronomy centre and water fun park complex.
According to Wee, the project is not just about physical development but also about creating a lively public space that reflects the culture, creativity and aspirations of the community.
He said Sarawakians are invited to propose names for the overall complex, water fun park, water fun park poolside restaurant, corridor with retail kiosks, exhibition hall, gastronomy centre including cafe, bar bistro, bakery, restaurant 1 and restaurant 2, co-working space and multipurpose hall.
Each name will become part of the story and identity of the place for years to come, he added.
Participation is free, and while participants may submit multiple entries, only one entry per person is eligible to win a prize.
Contest rules state that suggested names must be unique and are not already in use elsewhere.
In addition, proposed names must not infringe copyright or trademarks, contain religious connotations or carry negative implications relating to culture, race or religion. They must also not be obscene, offensive or inappropriate.
“We believe that public spaces should carry names that resonate within the community, and this is an opportunity for everyone to contribute ideas that celebrate our local heritage, creativity and sense of belonging,” said Wee.
Details of eligibility, submission requirements and contest rules are outlined in the official terms and conditions.
MBKS is offering attractive prizes: RM3,000 for the first prize, RM2,000 for the second prize, RM1,000 for third prize, and RM500 each for consolation prizes.
Winning entries will be selected based on sustainability, originality and relevance to the character of each space.
Submissions can be made using the official contest entry form, available on the MBKS website or at the MBKS Lobby (security counter).
Entries may be submitted by email (request@mbks.gov.my) or in person within the contest period, which ends at noon, Jan 26, 2026.
“This initiative reflects MBKS’ commitment to community engagement and participatory city-building. We want our residents to feel a sense of ownership and pride in the spaces we develop together,” said the mayor.
MBKS encourages all Sarawakians to take part in this contest and share their ideas.
