BINTULU (Jan 11): Two individuals were safely evacuated following flooding at the Sangan Health Clinic in Tatau on Saturday night, after continuous rain caused water levels to rise to nearly one metre.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from the Tatau fire station were dispatched to the clinic at around 7.48pm.

“Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed that several people were trapped by floodwaters.

“Using a fibre boat owned by a member of the public, firefighters evacuated an adult woman and a young girl to a flood-free area approximately 100 metres away.

“Both victims were later taken to Tatau Town and placed under the care of family members,” the department said in a statement.

Bomba said seven other individuals, comprising five men and two women, chose to remain at the clinic despite the rising water.

“Firefighters advised them to stay alert and to closely monitor the water level for their safety,” it added.

The water level in the area was still rising at the time of monitoring, with rainy conditions persisting.

The flood situation in Bintulu continues to show an upward trend, with the number of evacuees increasing as of this morning.
