OM Sarawak forges partnership with Unimas to explore sustainable uses of silico manganese slags
by Churchill Edward · Borneo Post OnlineKOTA SAMARAHAN (Nov 8): OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (OM Sarawak) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) aimed at conducting an in-depth study on the environmental suitability and potential industrial applications of silico manganese (SiMn) slags.
This partnership underscores a shared commitment to advancing sustainable practices in construction and beyond, according to Unimas in a press statement.
The agreement relates to the applications and the environmental safety of silicon manganese slags generated by OM Sarawak in its production of silicon manganese alloy.
“It encompasses two focused studies: a study on the chemical composition and properties of silicon manganese slag and the slag products, led by Prof Dr Zainab Ngaini; and a study on silicon manganese slag as coarse aggregate replacement in various constructions sites, led by Prof Dr Ng Chee Khoon,” said the statement.
“Under the terms of this agreement, OM Sarawak will leverage the expertise of Unimas’ distinguished consultancy team to carry out a series of chemical analysis on SiMn and explore their potential for industrial uses across various sectors in accordance with the requirements standards.
“Collaboration with Unimas will be essential in OM Sarawak’s efforts to secure regulatory approvals for using SiMn slags as a sustainable construction material,” it stressed.
In the same statement, OM Sarawak managing director Chen Xiao Dong expressed excitement for the partnership’s potential to transform the use of SiMn slags across various industries.
“This study not only aims to enhance the environmental sustainability of our processes, but also explores innovative ways to repurpose by-products, aligning with our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship,” he said.
Meanwhile, Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit stated that the collaboration with OM Sarawak is a significant step towards supporting Sarawak’s vision of a recyclable economy.
“This project aligns perfectly with Unimas’ mission to be a community-driven university, fostering innovative solutions that benefit both the environment and local industries.”
“We are proud to lead initiatives that push the boundaries of sustainable practices and enhance our contribution to the community,” he said.
