According to the Meteorological Department, the weather is expected to impact the region from December 30, with moderate rainfall and snowfall likely on December 31 and January 1.
The weather office said that higher and mid-hill areas are likely to receive snowfall, while lower and plain regions may experience rainfall. The spell is expected to continue until January 2, after which weather conditions are likely to improve on January 3 and 4. The rainfall and snowfall are expected to bring relief to farmers and orchardists, especially those dependent on winter moisture for crops and apple orchards.
Cold Wave Continues
Along with precipitation, a cold wave warning has been issued for several areas. Dense fog has also been reported in lower and plain regions, affecting visibility. On Monday, visibility dropped to just 40 metres in Bilaspur and 100 metres in Mandi, causing difficulties for commuters. The Meteorological Department has advised people to remain cautious while travelling, especially during early morning and late-night hours.
Temperatures Drop Across the State
Several areas in Himachal Pradesh recorded sub-zero temperatures. Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti was the coldest place with a minimum temperature of minus 6.7 degrees Celsius, followed by Kukumseri at minus 4.2 degrees. Shimla recorded 8.6 degrees, Manali 5.1 degrees, and Dharamshala 6.4 degrees Celsius. In the plains, Una recorded 4.8 degrees, while Sundernagar recorded 3.5 degrees Celsius.
Fog Disrupts Transport Services
Dense fog also affected air and road travel. At Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, several flights were delayed or cancelled due to poor visibility. Airlines, including IndiGo, issued advisories to passengers and said they were monitoring the situation closely.
The weather department has advised residents to remain alert as cold wave conditions and fog are likely to persist in the coming days.
