Distraught Driver Hits Elderly Man in Accident, Pleads with Uncle Kentang for Help After 12-Hour Hospital Wait

by · WORLD OF BUZZ

A recent story came to light after Malaysian philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng, better known as Uncle Kentang, lent a helping hand in transporting an elderly man involved in a road accident.

In a Facebook post, Uncle Kentang revealed how, upon transporting an 84-year-old woman in his ambulance at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM (HUKM), Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, he was approached by a woman at the emergency parking bay who sought his help to transport the elderly man to Sungai Buloh Hospital.

The philanthropist agreed to the woman’s request and later learned that she had accidentally hit the elderly man who was crossing the road at approximately 6:00 AM, leaving him with a fractured shoulder.

“At the emergency parking bay, a woman approached me. She looked helpless and asked, ‘Are you Uncle Kentang?’ When I said yes, she asked if I could help transfer a patient to Sungai Buloh.
“The elderly man had been walking and crossing the road when the woman’s car hit him. It was still dark at the time. She immediately brought him to HUKM and stayed by his side from 6:00 AM; it wasn’t until 7:00 PM that I met her,” he added.

After discussing the situation with the doctors, an At-Own-Risk (AOR) Discharge was arranged following instructions from the elderly man’s relatives, and the transfer was confirmed.

“I went to the Emergency Department and saw the elderly man. We contacted his relatives in Sungai Buloh, Selangor, received their instructions, and confirmed the transfer. I then went to the counter and was told there was no bill to pay, just a release form to be collected from the nurse. HUKM is a tertiary hospital, so the bill would have been costly. Transferring him to Sungai Buloh Hospital saved him a lot of trouble and money,” he wrote.

“I didn’t charge the woman a single sen for my ambulance service”

Once everything was confirmed, Uncle Kentang transported the elderly man in his ambulance, with the woman accompanying them.

“The woman was sobbing uncontrollably. It was a huge relief for her that I happened to be there, especially after spending more than 12 hours at the hospital trying to figure out what to do. She was desperately looking for an ambulance, and we appeared right in front of her. It felt like a godsend, an ambulance there to help.”

When they arrived at Sungai Buloh Hospital, they were met by the victim’s family and doctors, who took over and handled the case.

“We checked him into the Emergency Department, and the doctors in Sungai Buloh were just as helpful as those at HUKM. I didn’t charge the woman anything because this is our service to the victim, to her, and to the victim’s family.”
