“A powerful reflection of M’sia’s diversity”- 3 Healthcare Workers Caring For Tun M Draw Praise At Tun Dr Hasmah’s Funeral

Following the passing of Malaysia’s beloved former First Lady, Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali, tributes have poured in from across the country as leaders, Malaysians and healthcare workers came together to pay their respects to the centenarian.

Amid the solemn proceedings, a post shared by Public Heath Malaysia on Faecbook captured a particularly touching moment: three healthcare workers standing beside former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as he mourned the loss of his wife.

A simple image that captured Malaysia’s diversity

What caught the attention of many Malaysians was the diversity represented in the photograph.

Standing together beside Tun Mahathir were three healthcare professionals: one Malay, one Chinese and one Indian.

It may have simply been a coincidence, but the image resonated with many during such a difficult moment. At a time when the country was mourning alongside Tun Mahathir, the three workers appeared to represent something deeply familiar to Malaysians: people from different backgrounds coming together to care for one another.

A tribute shared on Facebook by Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also captured the sentiment:

“As Malaysians worry and pray for Tun Mahathir’s health, three dedicated healthcare workers from IJN, one Malay, one Chinese and one Indian stand by his side. They are a powerful reflection of Malaysia’s diversity, united in caring for him. Thank you to our frontline workers.” he wrote.

The care and dedication behind the scene

Public Health Malaysia also highlighted the small details behind the scene, including the healthcare workers regularly sanitising their hands as part of efforts to maintain hygiene and reduce the risk of infection.

These seemingly routine actions reflect the level of care and responsibility involved in looking after a patient, particularly during such an emotional and difficult period.

The platform ended its tribute by thanking the healthcare workers for caring for Tun Mahathir and recognising the trust placed in them by his family.

While the country gathered to remember Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, these frontliners continued doing what they do best: keeping a close eye on their patient and making sure he received the care he needed.

The photograph has since struck a chord with Malaysians online, not simply because of who was in it, but because of what it represented. For in the middle of a deeply painful farewell, three Malaysians from different backgrounds stood together to care for another Malaysian.
