Strictly Come Dancing's Wynne Evans emotionally admits 'I still worry about dying alone'

by · Wales Online

Prior to lighting up the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom with Katya Jones, Wynne Evans opened up about the highs and lows from his dating life and fears of loneliness, following a traumatic split from his ex-wife, and the mother of his two children, Tanwen, back in 2016.

In May, Wynne spoke to Rich Leigh on The Starting Line Podcast and shared a rare insight into his new relationship with girlfriend Liz Brookes, who has been spotted cheering him on from the Strictly audience.

Prior to finding love with events manager Liz, 50, Wynne, 52, recalled meeting "nice people, and a lot of nutters" when he returned to the dating scene after his divorce, prompting host Rich to ask: "Did anyone date you because you’re the GoCompare man?"

"Of course, loads of people!" Wynne exclaimed in response, after finding fame as fictional opera singer Gio Compario on the famous adverts.

The Welsh Strictly star hinted he had exhausted the dating apps before meeting Liz at an event, telling Rich that although they hadn't been together for very long, they'd been having "fun".

Wynne explained: "I came out of another relationship, and then... nothing. And then, just recently, met this other person. So it’s good, it’s fun."

"Not putting too much on it?" Rich probed, to which Wynne responded by admitting he wants something long-term in his life, due to concerns about "dying alone".

He replied: "Yeah, so I’m way more philosophical now, about that, and I still worry about dying alone - that’s one of my worries."

The BBC Radio Wales host went on to reveal something he'd learned after interviewing Dame Esther Rantzen on the subject of loneliness.

He poignantly shared: "I interviewed Esther Rantzen once, and we were talking about loneliness, and she said, 'you can be lonely in a full room, you know?' And you totally can be."

Wynne has credited his partner Liz for helping him to improve his health and fitness, which saw him lose an incredible seven stone by quitting bread, burgers, and cheese, and reducing his alcohol intake.

He shared on the podcast: "I go out running with my girlfriend and stuff, and I feel much better for it. I will go out with her."
