Pet food contaminated with Salmonella has been recalled in seven states
· The Fresno BeePet owners will want to double-check their pantries this holiday week after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall of dog biscuits due to a potential Salmonella contamination risk.
The FDA routinely conducts testing and issues recalls when even a potential contamination risk is identified, as is the case with the current recall.
On Dec. 24, the FDA issued a recall involving products distributed across several U.S. states. While no illnesses have been reported so far, the FDA warns that exposure could pose health risks to both pets and humans who handle the food.

Why Salmonella is dangerous for pets and humans
Consuming foods contaminated with Salmonella can make both animals and people sick.
Dogs that consume contaminated food may experience symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite.
Humans who become infected with Salmonella often get sick with watery diarrhea that might have blood or mucus, stomach cramps that can be severe, headache, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Veterinary experts note that Salmonella is one of the most common causes of pet food recalls because it can survive in both raw and dry products, including treats like the recalled biscuits.
Salmonella can survive for months, even in sealed packages.
"People can get infected when they handle or prepare the food and don't wash their hands and utensils thoroughly," Professor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California at Davis Jane Sykes wrote in the Washington Post.
The FDA said there have been no confirmed illnesses to pets or humans linked to the recalled dog biscuits to date.
Where the products were sold
The recalled dog biscuits were distributed at pet and grocery stores in:
- Colorado
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Missouri
- Texas
- Montana
- Nebraska
What pet owners should do
Consumers who purchased the recalled products should stop feeding them immediately. The FDA recommends disposing of the biscuits or returning them to the place of purchase for a refund. Pet owners should also wash their hands and sanitize all surfaces that came into contact with the food or packaging.
About Consumers Supply Distributing, LLC
- The company is a Midwest-based animal nutrition and feed manufacturer, supplying both livestock feed and companion animal products.

Recent pet-food related recalls
Even well-established pet food brands can face isolated safety issues. The FDA publishes dozens of pet food recall notices each year, most tied to bacterial contamination discovered through routine inspections or sampling.
Because of frequent recalls, the FDA encourages pet owners to pay attention to recall notices, check lot codes carefully, and follow handling guidelines to reduce health risks for both pets and people.
