Two more children die amid measles outbreak; suspected cases cross 70,000

New Delhi, May 31: Two more children with measles-like symptoms died across the country in the 24 hours leading up to 8:00 a.m. today, as health authorities continue to battle a widespread outbreak.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 1,377 new measles-related cases were reported during the period. Of these, 1,324 were classified as suspected cases, taking the total number of suspected infections recorded since March 15 to 70,936.

Health officials confirmed 53 additional measles cases in the last 24 hours, raising the cumulative number of confirmed infections to 9,049.

Since the outbreak began on March 15, a total of 56,886 patients with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals. Of them, 52,841 have recovered and been discharged.

No deaths from confirmed measles were reported during the latest reporting period, leaving the total number of fatalities from confirmed cases unchanged at 90 since March 15.

However, two deaths among suspected measles patients were recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths linked to suspected cases to 495.

Dhaka division continues to be the worst-affected region, reporting 33,470 suspected measles cases so far. Among them, 6,306 cases have been laboratory-confirmed, the highest number recorded in any division.
