Michigan Democrat files impeachment articles on HHS chief RFK Jr.
by Chris Benson · UPIDec. 10 (UPI) -- A Michigan congresswoman filed an impeachment motion to remove U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., filed articles of impeachment against Kennedy, branding him "the biggest self-created threat to our health and safety."
"RFK Jr. has got to go. Today, I introduced articles of impeachment to remove him from office," the Michigan Democrat said in a video posted to social media.
She targeted Kennedy for gutting decades of medical research and fueling soaring health care costs.
"Under his watch, families are less safe, health care costs are skyrocketing, and lifesaving research -- including right here in Michigan -- is being gutted," she continued.
Stevens, a U.S. senate candidate, said Kennedy has "turned his back on science and public health and on the American people."
Stevens, 42, repeatedly has demanded Kennedy's removal.
In September, she first announced intent to file impeachment articles over what she called "health care chaos" by his leadership under U.S. President Donald Trump.
However, the legislative effort faces long odds in the Republican-controlled Congress.
The bid to oust Kennedy was supported by Stand Up for Science, which is a group dedicated to defending and advancing America's scientific ecosystem.
Kennedy, 71, has drawn criticism for multiple controversial actions during his tenure, including recommending changes to standard childhood vaccination schedules and backing Trump's unfounded assertion that pregnant women should avoid taking Tylenol.
Stand Up's top brass called Kennedy's actions "negligent," saying he "must be impeached and removed" and that his leadership will "result in harm and loss of life."
"For the first time in human history, we progressed from 30% of babies not making it to adulthood to over 98% surviving to adulthood because of modern medicine and vaccines," according to Colette Delawalla, founder and CEO of Stand Up for Science.
Delawalla stated that eliminating "effective public health interventions with proven track records and dismantling evidence-based science is not the way to promote health and reduce chronic illness."
On Wednesday, an HHS spokesperson told The Hill that Kennedy remained "focused on improving Americans' health and lowering costs, not on partisan theatrics designed to elevate standing in a failing, third-rate Senate bid."
