May 3 (Asia Today) -- South Korean physician Kim Chul-soo marked 50 years in medicine with the release of his memoir, reflecting on a career devoted to patient care, humanitarian service and lifelong learning.

Kim, chairman of the Hyocheon Medical Foundation and former president of the Korean Red Cross, held a book launch and concert event Wednesday at the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul to celebrate his autobiography, The Spring at Dawn.

"I promise to live each day with gratitude and love, without losing my original purpose, as a doctor who heals," Kim said in a welcoming speech. He added that his commitment to working on the front lines remains unchanged.

The memoir chronicles his journey overcoming hardship and contributing to society through medicine. Kim said he hopes the book will inspire younger generations, adding that all proceeds will be donated to support medical expenses for low-income patients.

At age 82, Kim continues to work actively, beginning his day at 4 a.m. and maintaining a routine of patient care. His philosophy - "even if we go slowly, we must go the right way" - has guided his career.

A life of service and leadership

Kim is widely regarded for practicing medicine without discrimination. His belief that "all people are equal, only some are in greater need" reflects decades of humanitarian work.

He has provided aid in crisis zones, including the war in Ukraine, earthquake-hit areas in Türkiye and wildfire-stricken regions in South Korea. In one anecdote, he rushed to assist an emergency patient carrying an oxygen tank himself, illustrating his hands-on approach to care.

Over his career, Kim has held numerous leadership roles, including head of the Korean Hospital Association and president of the Korean Red Cross. He has received multiple honors, including the Moran Order of Civil Merit and a presidential commendation.

The event drew about 300 attendees from the medical, business and political sectors, including Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and other prominent figures, who praised Kim's contributions and leadership.

Speakers described him as a mentor and humanitarian whose life offers guidance and inspiration.

Despite his achievements, Kim emphasized humility and continuous learning. "Youth is in the mind," he said, urging people to listen to others and remain open to new ideas.
