A DVLA means drivers might not be 'legally' driving if they were born in a certain year. Drivers born in 1954 have been warned that motorists reaching age 70 must renew their driving licence when they hit the milestone and every three years after that.

Age UK warned: "When you reach the age of 70, your driving licence expires but this doesn't necessarily mean you have to stop driving. If you want to continue, you just need to renew your licence. You'll need to renew it every 3 years after that. Renewal is free of charge."

They clarified: "No, you don't have to retake your driving test at 70, but you do have to make a health declaration when renewing your licence. And if you have a health condition or disability, you may have to have your driving ability assessed. " Age UK further advised: "Don't forget to apply for any extra categories of vehicle covered on your old licence if you still want to be able to drive them.

"There might be extra costs for these but if you don't apply for these extra categories you'll only be able to drive a car in future. If your licence expires and you don't apply for a new one, you won't legally be allowed to drive." Section 88 Criteria includes: "You meet the medical standards of fitness to drive.

"If you have a medical condition and have been told not to drive by a doctor or healthcare professional, you should not do so. If your doctor or healthcare professional is unsure about how a medical condition affects driving, they should refer to ‘Assessing fitness to drive – a guide for medical professionals’ at www.gov.uk/dvla/fitnesstodrive."

Other criteria is you have held a valid driving licence and only drive vehicles you have applied for on your current application and were entitled to drive on your previous licence and if you hold a Group 2 (bus or lorry) licence, your entitlement has not been suspended, revoked or refused by a traffic commissioner.
