Liam Payne's cause of death has been confirmed at a UK inquest after the One Direction star fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aries, Argentina. ITV The X Factor star Payne's cause of death has been confirmed in a UK inquest opening.

It comes after the Once Direction star suffered "multiple traumas" in a fall from the balcony at the luxury Buenos Aires hotel he was staying at in October. His medical cause of death was confirmed by Dr Roberto Victor Cohen as 'polytrauma' - meaning multiple traumatic injuries.

A hearing, which Buckinghamshire Coroner's Court said was held on December 17, was told it may take "some time" to formally confirm how the 31-year-old died. The inquest into Liam's death in the UK has been adjourned until a pre-inquest review on November 6, the coroner's court said.

Five people have been charged over Liam's death after he fell from a third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. They face charges of manslaughter as hotel employee Ezequiel Pereyra and waiter Braian Paiz, have been charged with supplying cocaine.

The hearing was also told Payne was formally identified 'with the assistance of the funeral directors in Buckinghamshire'. Senior Coroner Crispin Butler said: “Whilst there are ongoing investigations in Argentina into the circumstances of Liam’s death, over which I have no legal jurisdiction, it is anticipated that procuring the relevant information to address particularly how Liam came by his death may take some time through the formal channel of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.”

It comes after Payne's girlfriend has released a heartbreaking letter to her 'best friend and love of her life' after his death. Influencer Kate Cassidy had travelled to the South American city with Payne as the pair attended his former bandmate Niall Horan's concert before the 25-year-old travelled back to the US just days before his tragic death.
