Strictly Come Dancing's Wynne Evans 'still fears dying alone' despite 'fun' new romance

by · Birmingham Live

Before setting the Strictly Come Dancing stage alight with Katya Jones, Wynne Evans revealed his dating highs and lows and fears of loneliness after a painful split from his ex-wife and mother of his two children, Tanwen, in 2016.

In May, Wynne gave a rare glimpse into his new relationship with girlfriend Liz Brookes, who has been seen supporting him from the Strictly audience, on The Starting Line Podcast with Rich Leigh.

Before finding love with events manager Liz, 50, Wynne, 52, remembered encountering "nice people, and a lot of nutters" when he re-entered the dating scene post-divorce, leading host Rich to ask: "Did anyone date you because you're the GoCompare man? "

"Of course, loads of people!" Wynne responded enthusiastically, having gained fame as fictional opera singer Gio Compario in the well-known adverts.

The Welsh Strictly star hinted at exhausting dating apps before meeting Liz at an event, telling Rich that although their relationship was still fresh, they were having "fun".

Wynne elaborated: "I came out of another relationship, and then... nothing. And then, just recently, met this other person. So it's good, it's fun."

"Not putting too much on it? " Rich queried, to which Wynne admitted his desire for a long-term commitment due to fears of "dying alone". He replied: "Yeah, so I'm way more philosophical now, about that, and I still worry about dying alone - that's one of my worries."

The BBC Radio Wales presenter disclosed a valuable insight gained from talking to Dame Esther Rantzen about the nature of loneliness, remarking: "I interviewed Esther Rantzen once, and we were talking about loneliness, and she said, 'you can be lonely in a full room, you know?' And you totally can be."

In terms of his well-being, Wynne attributed significant improvements in his health and fitness to his partner Liz, which included an impressive seven-stone weight loss achieved by cutting out bread, burgers, and cheese, and moderating his alcohol consumption.

He mentioned on the podcast: "I go out running with my girlfriend and stuff, and I feel much better for it. I will go out with her."
