How many cameras?

- Nothing will fully launch the Phone (4b) on July 7th at 11 am BST via YouTube, with blue colorway confirmed.
Nothing has just unveiled the design of its brand new budget phone, and the Phone (4b) isn’t what we were expecting in a couple of respects.
The past week has been filled with drip-feed teasers for a new approach to budget phones from the London-based brand, headed up by Carl Pei, formerly of OnePlus.
Rather than following up on our favourite budget phone, the CMF Phone 2 Pro, Nothing is bringing everything under its mainline brand. The Nothing Phone (4b) will slot in neatly under the existing Nothing Phone (4a).
After a series of (quite literally) sketchy images and a spec leak, Nothing has now officially revealed the design of the Phone (4b) in full, while reiterating that it will be fully launched on 7 July at 11am BST on YouTube.
A key piece of info on release day will be the budget price, but here’s what we’ve learned from the post.
For one thing, the general look of the phone looks more like the higher-end Nothing Phone (4a) Pro than the Nothing Phone (4a). In a similar way to the former handset, it restricts the company’s trademark semi-transparent elements to the top third of the phone, where the cameras are mounted.
It’s clear that it will come in a blue colourway, at least, just like the (4a). If it matches, there will also be pink, black and white.
When one becomes two
Which brings us to the other surprising part: there are cameras here, plural. Initial signs seemed to point to Nothing deploying just a single camera module – an idea I was rather fond of.
But here we are looking at a dual camera set-up. Silly me, I guess.
The little circular dimple motif in the bottom left edge also evokes the more premium Pro.
The Nothing Phone (4b) doesn’t completely ditch the Nothing Phone (4a) design, with what appears to be the same simplified Glyph Bar offering face-down notifications and other such novel functions.
Nothing claims that its new budget option features “enhanced durability,” as well as “improved structural strength, and a soft, skin-friendly finish designed to be comfortable throughout the day”.
Count us intrigued. Then maybe count those camera modules again. Yep, definitely two.
