Henderson offers cash for homeowners to ditch their grass

by · Las Vegas Review-Journal

It’s an opportune time for Henderson residents to renovate their lawns and save some money in the process.

The city launched a new rebate that rewards residents for going green, offering a $50 tree-planting rebate and up to $575 supplemental rebate for residents who replace their grass lawns with desert-friendly landscape. The initiative is being made in an effort to help homeowners switch to water-efficient landscapes to reduce water bills and aid water conservation with the benefits of a low-maintenance yard.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority’s Water Smart Landscapes rebate program offers Clark County homeowners who replace grass with drought-tolerant plants $5 per square foot of grass removed from their yards up to 10,000 square feet. SNWA offers $2.50 per square foot thereafter.

Henderson residents who apply for the SNWA rebate first are eligible for a $575 supplemental rebate.

While grass is considered cooler to the touch, shade provided by tree cover can keep areas 10 to 25 degrees cooler, according to the SNWA, which also offers a $100 rebate per tree planted. Henderson residents can receive an additional $50 per tree.
