Students learn about science of trees and the art of woodworking

They call this school treetops with good reason. Class is often outside in the acres of cedar and oak trees in Euless, where they call school home.

The kids know all about the science of those trees, and when the school started dealing with trees that died, or had to be cut for one reason or another. An idea sprouted in their PE coach's head.

The students studied how to identify unhealthy trees. They would mark them, size them up, and haul them downhill to make a little magic.

"Not everybody is going to be a doctor, but you can be maybe a good carpenter, maybe you can a good painter," said Andres Rios, their teacher.

In lieu of PE, Coach Andres started this woodwork/forestry class, where they're building benches and tables.

The pride in their faces when they can see something they built out of nothing. That's what I want to get from all of them," he said.

Notihing is wasted.

"We'll pick up that sawdust and put it in the little boxes. You may have seen the little plantation boxes to fertilize the soil," said one student.

Nothing overlooked.

"This gloss is how the wood gets its natural and beautiful looks and features," said Brooks.

So beautiful, in fact, the furniture the students made is in their outdoor classroom for them to use.

"There's actually a bench in the main place, I think that's my favorite that we've made," said Veda.

There is one tiny complaint, though.

"I wish that we could get paid for this, because like, look at this. Do you see how nice it is?"Brooks proudly stated.

The finished product isn't just in the classroom. They take some of the furniture they built and auction it off to raise more money to plant more trees and buy more tools, since they go through them pretty quickly. If you have any lying around, they would love to have tool donations too.
