by Brittney Johnson · 5 NBCDFWFor Mother’s Day, some moms say the best gift is helping other mothers in need.
The founder of nonprofit Each Step Home explained to NBC 5 Anchor Brittney Johnson that her experience as a mother is a huge part of what has inspired their efforts to help families separated due to immigration practices, and what led to raising money for mothers being held at the Dilley Immigration Center in South Texas for the May holiday.
“I just think about my own son and everything I do to take care of him,” founder Casey Revkin said.
“How much I worry about how much he’s sleeping, how much he’s eating. Is he doing well in school? Is he happy? And these mothers in detention can’t do that. But one thing I can do is help them just a little bit and help them get food they’ll eat or water they can drink,” she said.
Revkin said donations from people across the country have poured in ahead of Mother’s Day. They started with a goal of $10,000, but donations totaled about $35,000 two days before Mother's Day.
Many donors are moms or are giving in honor of their own mothers and grandmothers, and send messages of encouragement with their donations, hoping to let the women at the Dilley facility know they are not alone.
“We got a message from one of the mothers that she was so grateful, and may God bless us. She said she was using the money for water, oatmeal, and phone calls. That just hit me so hard," Revkin said.
Each Step Home plans to continue donating to family accounts after Mother’s Day. You can learn more about their work here.
