Crown Princess Mette-Marit goes on sick leave

Crown Princess Mette-Marit has gone on sick leave due to medicinal side effects.

The Norwegian Royal, who last week shared that she has restarted treatments for her chronic lung disease, will be off work for at least a week, according to the Royal Court.

In a brief statement, the Court shared: “Due to side effects of the medicines the Crown Princess must take for her chronic lung disease, she is on sick leave, initially for a week.”

All of Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s engagements have been cancelled or postponed as she recovers from the side effects of her medications.

The Royal Court had previously shared on 11 October that Crown Princess Mette-Marit would restart treatment for her chronic pulmonary fibrosis, and that alterations to her schedule while she receives treatment may be expected.

The Court said: “Previous experience has shown that the medicines can lead to side effects that can have consequences for the Crown Princess’s official programme. Therefore, we find it natural to share this information this time.”

Crown Princess Mette-Marit was diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018. In an interview to mark her 50th birthday in 2023, the future queen said of her health: “There is much that is painful and difficult and tough about it. At the same time, there is something very nice about it, because you meet yourself very much. You have to take yourself much more seriously. And then you have to slow down, which I have done a lot.”

The royal had been in Berlin earlier this week to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Nordic Embassy Complex alongside King Frederik and Queen Mary and Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.
