Need-To-Know Info Before Hiking In Oklahoma This Winter

· NewsTalk 1290

Although we've had a handful of chilly days this winter, Oklahoma has been proving to be tolerable this winter. On the days that it doesn't quite feel like winter, many people have opted to visit the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and other parts of the Wichita Mountains.

As some locals have quickly discovered, Oklahoma's wildlife doesn't always play by the rules. And you might be surprised at some of the tips that officials have urged hikers to remember during the winter time.

Don't let Oklahoma's "chill winter vibe" fool you - there are still very real risks when it comes to hiking in December. Take a glance at a few things you need to know before heading out this winter.

Not all wildlife are tucked away for the winter in Oklahoma.

Even though we've been experiencing partial winter weather, Oklahoma hasn't yet actually saw first day of winter in 2025. And even when the first day of winter does arrive, that doesn't mean Oklahoma's wildlife is living according to our calendars.

Locals recently ran across a giant snake, suspected to be a rat snake, in the early afternoon on Tuesday, December 9. Lea Greg Ferst took to Facebook, asking other Oklahomans "when do they hibernate?"

It might seem like a surprise to some, but wildlife are typically still very active in early and mid December. The really cold weather arrives in January and February, and even then, some wildlife still thrive in the cold temperatures. Visitors will likely see longhorn cattle and bison still roaming the plains and munching away during the cold months.

Dress for success and plan ahead before heading out on a hike.

Wildlife in Oklahoma naturally adjust for the cold temperatures, but hikers should take extra care to prepare. Officials with the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge shared their top hiking tips, including the importance of dressing properly for the season.

"Wear layers and prepare to add or remove them as needed," they said. "Wear quick drying materials and waterproof shoes or boots." The Wichita Mountains have slick areas that can be difficult to scale when wet, so it's wise to avoid slick areas.

Even if the sun is hiding away behind clouds, sunscreen is still incredibly important. The suns rays can still reflect back on you, and it's still very possible to burn in the winter.

Don't forget the essentials!

Water and medical supplies are just as important in the winter as they during the brutal summers here. But, they aren't the only necessary items you should have with you.

As long as weather conditions permit, the Wildlife Refuge and other public parks are always open year-round. Challenge yourself to a winter hike in Oklahoma and see how prepared you can be.
