Boil-water advisory lifted in Amersfoort after nearly two weeks

Residents in Amersfoort and surrounding areas can now use tap water without boiling after a nearly two-week advisory issued due to enterococci bacterial contamination, local water company Vitens announced Sunday.

“Recent test results show that the drinking water is fully clean and therefore safe,” Vitens said. The source of the contamination has not yet been determined.

Earlier this month, a routine quality inspection detected a mild bacterial contamination with enterococci in the municipal water system, including a storage cellar in Amersfoort. The bacteria can appear due to high groundwater levels, leaks, or other external factors.

Since January 5, Vitens advised more than 85,000 households across thirteen locations to boil tap water for at least three minutes.

The advisory applied to parts of Amersfoort, Achterveld, Bunschoten-Spakenburg, De Glind, Hoogland, Hooglanderveen, Leusden, Soest, Soesterberg, Stoutenburg, Stoutenburg-Noord, Terschuur, and Woudenberg.
