Kebbi NLC pushes for N70,000 allowance for workers
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineThe Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kebbi State chapter, has demanded a minimum transportation allowance of N70,000 for public sector workers to ease the burden of rising commuting costs.
The state chairman of the union, Murtala Usman, disclosed this in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Monday, saying the labour body would soon meet with Governor Nasir Idris to formally present its proposal.
Usman explained that the demand followed a stakeholders’ meeting involving affiliate unions of the NLC in the state, where workers agreed to push for the introduction of the allowance.
He said the proposed benefit would cover all categories of public sector employees, including teachers, local government workers, health personnel and other civil servants.
“We have held a stakeholders’ meeting with all our affiliate unions in the state, and we have resolved to present our demand for transportation allowance to the state governor,” he said.
The labour leader said the union was proposing a minimum of N70,000, or an amount higher than that, depending on the transportation challenges confronting workers.
“We are demanding a minimum of N70,000 or above, and we want the allowance to cover all categories of workers without discrimination. Teachers, local government workers, health workers and other civil servants should all benefit,” Usman added.
He disclosed that the union had also begun discussions with members of the Kebbi State House of Assembly to secure their support before approaching the state government.

According to him, the proposed allowance would help ease the financial pressure on employees struggling with the increasing cost of daily transportation to their workplaces.
Usman expressed optimism that the planned meeting with Governor Idris would produce a positive outcome, assuring workers that the union would continue to advocate policies that improve their welfare.
The demand comes amid increasing living and transportation costs, which have placed additional financial pressure on Nigerian workers, particularly those who rely on public transport for their daily commutes.
If approved, the proposed N70,000 transportation allowance would provide an additional financial benefit for public sector workers in Kebbi State.
