The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Bauchi State has recorded 9,969 human rights complaints between January and October 2026, with 6,664 cases still awaiting resolution.

The commission’s State Coordinator, Mrs Yachit Dala, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Wednesday.

Dala said the commission had successfully resolved 3,305 complaints within the period, while the remaining cases were still pending.

She listed the complaints to include gender-based violence (GBV), rape, sexual and domestic violence, mistreatment, abandonment of parental responsibilities, as well as violations of civil and political rights.

According to her, the commission receives, assesses and registers complaints before taking steps towards resolving them amicably.

“The commission also investigates allegations and sets up special panels or tribunals to hear petitions and review testimonies,” she said.

Dala explained that the NHRC also provides support to victims and makes recommendations aimed at achieving peaceful resolutions of reported cases.

She, however, identified inadequate funding, limited public awareness and illiteracy as major challenges affecting the commission’s operations.

The coordinator urged residents to report incidents of abuse and human rights violations to the commission, while calling on youth and women’s groups to take active roles in campaigns against such practices.

She said greater public awareness and community participation were necessary to strengthen efforts to protect human rights and ensure that victims received appropriate assistance.
