Two confirmed killed, two injured in attack on Imo community
by Adenle Ahmed Abiola · The Eagle OnlineArmed men suspected to be bandits have reportedly killed two people and left two others with gunshot injuries during an attack in a farm area near Irete Secondary Technical School in the Irete Autonomous Community, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
The violent incident occurred on Monday, September 14, 2026, throwing the local community and neighbouring areas into a state of severe panic.
According to community sources, the casualties and survivors were part of a group inspecting an undeveloped plot of land when the gunmen opened fire on them.
One victim was identified as Chigaemezu Ozuzu, a resident of Umunjo, Irete, who was providing security for the team.
The second deceased victim was an individual from the Amakohia-Ubi Autonomous Community who was involved in the land transaction.
Two other individuals managed to escape the gunfire but sustained injuries.
They include a female land inspector and a security operative attached to the Imo State Security Organisation (IMSO), working under the Home Branch Irete Vigilante Platform.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Henry Okoye, has confirmed the incident in a press statement.

He said: “The Commissioner of Police, CP, Audu Garba Bosso, has today ordered immediate deployment of enhanced security operations in Owerri West and Oguta local government areas, following recent security concerns, including pockets of kidnapping and other criminal activities.
“The deployment covers Ejemekwuru, Ogbaku, Izombe, Irete, Umuguma, Okuku, Ndegwu, Amakohia-Ubi and adjoining communities.
“The action follows the attack and killing of two young persons in Irete on September 14, 2026, by suspected armed bandits.
“CP Bosso has condemned the incident and directed the relevant units to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.”
