The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has told Governor Ademola Adeleke that he had reports he is hiding criminals in the Osun State Government House.

IGP Disu said this during a meeting with Adeleke at the Government House in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Friday.

Addressing the governor, the IGP said he had received complaints that Adeleke and some others were dissatisfied with the performance of the Commissioner, Osun State Police Command, CP Ibrahim Gotan.

He said: “If I tell you, sir, that I have not had complaints, I have lied.

“And I will explain everything to you one by one, sir.

“I have heard that you are not happy, and some people are not happy with the Commissioner of Police for this reason and that reason.”

The IGP, however, said the Commissioner of Police had also briefed him on allegations that some suspects wanted by the police were taking refuge in the Government House.

Disu said: “He, too, has briefed me.

“He briefed me that some suspects he is looking for are hibernating in the Government House.

“I looked at that.

“If that is true, why should suspects be in the Government House?”

Disu added that he had advised the Commissioner on how to handle the matter.

He said: “I have told him how to go about it.

“I have heard that this party and that party are hibernating suspected criminals.”

The IGP also raised concerns that the CP informed him that some political parties are shielding criminals ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial election.

“I have heard that this party and that party are hibernating suspect criminals,” he stated.

Responding, Governor Adeleke insisted that no individual should receive protection from the law, regardless of any relationship with him or his administration.

He said: “If you see any of my people committing crime, arrest them.

“All these lies, I don’t play that.

“If it is my son that committed a crime, arrest him.

“And that is what I am saying in front of the Inspector General of Police.”

Adeleke criticised what he described as political gamesmanship surrounding security matters, stressing the need for law enforcement agencies to focus on bringing perpetrators of violence to justice.

He added: “But for you to be playing all these games and everything like that.

“The person that has been killed, a 40-year-old born in Ilobu….”

The governor also revealed that security intelligence available to his administration suggested that some individuals were planning to resume violent attacks within the next two weeks with the aim of creating fear among residents.

Adeleke said: “I have a security report that in two weeks time, they will start shooting again.

“So that people can be scared.

“And I am glad the Inspector General of Police is here today and he has said it openly, he would not tolerate any act of indiscipline, and he has given an order that you won’t tolerate, that is why I am happy.”

He expressed confidence that the visit of the IGP and the directives issued during the meeting would strengthen ongoing efforts to maintain peace, prevent further violence, and ensure that criminal elements operating in the state are brought to justice.

It could be recalled that Governor Adeleke had accused the state Commissioner of Police of lacking the capacity and willingness to carry out his duties impartially, calling on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to immediately redeploy him ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

This was according to a statement issued by the Osun State Government and signed by governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on June 26, 2026.

Adeleke made the demand while receiving a delegation sent by the Inspector-General of Police to assess the security situation in the state following recent incidents of political violence.

The governor alleged that the Commissioner of Police had failed to act fairly in the discharge of his responsibilities, insisting that the Osun State Police Command required urgent restructuring to restore public confidence and guarantee credible elections.

According to Adeleke: “The Commissioner of Police has demonstrated lack of willingness and capacity to act fairly and without partisan bias.”

He had further claimed that the Police Commissioner had lost the confidence of many residents across the state.

He said: “The general consensus among Osun people is that the Commissioner of Police is compromised and should be moved out of the state.

“Osun seeks fair policing, impartial policing and policing based on respect for rule of law.

“We are not asking for any favour other than fair protection of lives and properties.”

The Eagle Online reports that the build-up to the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election has been severely marred by escalating political violence, targeted assassinations, and widespread panic across major towns.

In the final stretch before the election, intense clashes between rival political groups have turned areas like Osogbo, Ile-Ife, Ede, and Ikire into flashpoints of fear.

A series of targeted killings within weeks of the poll has heightened insecurity with security reports indicating that nearly 10 people were killed in a single 48-hour wave of violent confrontations.

Reacting, the Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee of the Imole Campaign Council, Bamidele Salam, blamed the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the growing violence.

In a statement, Salam said: “The whole world should take note that virtually all the victims of recent politically motivated violence in Osun State have been members and supporters of the Accord Party and its allies.

“Only a few weeks ago, Mr Kolade Eluyera, an Accord member in Irewole Local Government, was brutally murdered in cold blood.

“On June 3, 2026, the Chairman of the Accord in Osogbo Local Government, Hon Asimiyu Ajibola, was shot multiple times by APC armed assailants and has remained hospitalised while battling for his life.

“Similarly, during the violent invasion of local government councils in 2025 by APC-sponsored thugs, Mr Ismaila Ibrahim and Hon Kasali Adebayo lost their lives in Ilesa.

“In Boripe Local Government, Oladimeji Taiwo and Oloyede Damilare were murdered during another APC-led violent attack on public institutions.

“These are not mere allegations.

“They are tragic realities that have left families devastated and communities traumatised.”

Salam further listed several Accord members allegedly killed or injured in separate attacks across the state, including Aderemi Abideen Abiodun (Ojubintin), Aderombi Abass, Ganiyu Gele, Wole Vulcanizer, Rafiu Quadri Abiodun, and Elijah Baba Ewe.

The lawmaker representing Ede Federal Constituency also alleged that the identities of several APC thugs repeatedly linked to violence were already in the public domain, accusing party leaders of shielding them from justice.

The APC, however, dismissed the allegations and accused leaders of the ruling party of sponsoring the violence.

The Osun State APC spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, alleged that four party members were killed by suspected Accord hoodlums in Ilesa within three days.

He also claimed that Saheed Oyegunju of Ward 9, Ikire, the hometown of the party’s governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, was murdered by hoodlums allegedly working for Accord Party.

In a statement sighted by The Eagle Online, Olabisi urged the Inspector-General of Police to intervene and investigate what he described as renewed attacks on APC members.

He said: “The Executive Chairman of Ilesa-West Local Government Council Area of the state, Olabide Oluwasegun, who narrowly escaped assassination when political hoodlums invaded his residence, disclosed that no fewer than four APC members had been killed within three days in the town.

“The new pattern of killings of our members by Accord Party hoodlums is reminiscent of the 2022 incidents when no fewer than 30 of our members and supporters were extra-judicially murdered across the state.

“We are urging the Inspector-General of Police to direct the state commissioner of police to investigate the development and bring the culprits and their sponsors to justice.”

Meanwhile, the Osun State Commissioner of Police attributed many of the killings to cult-related activities.

The police commissioner pledged to intensify efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure a peaceful environment for the election.
