Nwifuru approves N75,000 minimum wage for Ebonyi workers

After several months of anticipation from Ebonyi civil servants, the State Governor, Francis Nwifuru has finally announced approval for payment of N75, 000 minimum wage.

In a press statement on Sunday, signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, the Governor was said to have announced the approval shortly after a church service at the Government House Chapel, Abakaliki.

According to the statement, Governor Nwifuru said the decision followed careful review of the current economic situation in the country especially as it affects the workforce.

He explained that the least paid civil servant on grade level 2 will enjoy full minimum wage of N75, 000 while grade level 3 and above will get consequential increment of N40, 000 across board.

The Governor further announced that the implementation of the new minimum wage would commence on Monday October 28, 2024.

Uzor went further to state that Governor Nwifuru also announced the appointment of two General Managers to pilot affairs of two major government owned industrial plants in the state.

Those appointed include Dr. Obinna Ezenkwa for the State Pulverization Plant at Umuoghara, Ezza North,  and Barrister Uchenna Otuh to take charge of Ezzamgbo Pipe Production Factory, Ohaukwu local government area.

The Governor maintained that the appointments were based on the expertise of the appointees which he said were necessary to drive the needed growth in the Industries.

While urging the appointees to endeavour to bring their expertise to bear in the service to the state, he beckoned on stakeholders of the State to support the new General Managers to prosper the State through the Industries.

Recall that the Governor since assumption of office in May 29, 2023, has given N20,000 wage award to civil servants in the state across board, to ameliorate the harsh economic realities.

 The approval for a minimum wage of N75,000 is a step up of the governor’s welfare package to workers in the state.
