Democrats Seize US House as Senate Control Hangs in Balance
by Bill Giannopoulos · Greek City TimesDemocrats have made major gains in the 2026 US midterm elections, winning control of the House of Representatives, while the battle for the Senate remains unresolved.
Democrats are set to take control of the House of Representatives after a series of key victories in the November 3 midterm elections, setting up a significant shift in the political balance in Washington.
The result gives the party a route to challenge President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda during the second half of his presidency. However, claims that Democrats have won both chambers of Congress are premature while the Senate outcome remains unsettled. The Times of Israel+2
Senate battle remains undecided
Democrats recorded important Senate victories, including wins for Roy Cooper in North Carolina, Chris Pappas in New Hampshire and James Talarico in Texas. Sherrod Brown also defeated Republican incumbent John Husted in Ohio, flipping another seat. Forbes+2

But Republicans also held key ground, including Florida, where Senator Ashley Moody fended off a Democratic challenge. The final balance will determine whether Democrats can take control of the upper chamber as well.
The House has 435 voting members, with 218 seats required for a majority. The Senate has 100 members, and a party generally needs 51 seats to hold an outright majority.
What the results mean for Trump
A Democratic majority in the House would give the party greater power to scrutinise the administration, hold congressional hearings, investigate government decisions and influence the passage of legislation.
It would also make it harder for the White House to advance its domestic policy priorities without negotiating with opposition lawmakers.
The midterm elections are being closely watched as a measure of public sentiment towards Trump’s second term. Economic pressures, the cost of living and the administration’s foreign policy have featured prominently in the campaign and voter concerns. Reuters+1
The Senate result remains particularly important because the chamber has a separate role in confirming senior presidential appointments and federal judges, as well as considering legislation.
