by · Greek City Times

A driver who ran out of fuel in Lamia, central Greece, called police on Tuesday night asking officers to take him to an overnight petrol station, only for officers to discover that he was heavily intoxicated and arrest him for drink-driving.

According to LamiaReport, the incident occurred while police officers were dealing with an 83-year-old motorist who had been driving in the wrong direction on a national highway.

The driver had stopped his vehicle near the Lamia Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company (DEYAL) and called the police emergency number, 100, requesting a lift to buy fuel.

An experienced police call-centre operator immediately noticed something was wrong from the man’s speech and alerted a patrol car to check on him.

When traffic police officers arrived, they found that the driver was so intoxicated that he could not even remember his vehicle’s registration number.

A subsequent breathalyser test recorded 0.75 mg/l of alcohol in his breath in the first measurement and 0.83 mg/l in the second.

Police arrested the driver and filed a case against him. Officers took him to the police headquarters, where he remained overnight until the effects of the alcohol subsided.
