Mazonakis Case: Lawyers Drop Doctor’s Defence as New Evidence Emerges

Lawyers representing doctor Elias Theodoropoulos have withdrawn from representing his wife in the ongoing investigation into the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis, while continuing to represent the doctor.

The lawyers, Nikos Agapinos and Tellos Agapinos, said the decision was made for “purely legal reasons”, explaining that separate representation had become procedurally necessary because the defence positions of the two defendants had diverged.

They said they would provide further details if considered appropriate.

The development comes as investigators continue taking statements from employees of the clinic on Karneadou Street, where Mazonakis was treated before his death.

Nurse changes key part of testimony

A 61 year old retired nurse who worked part time at the clinic has given evidence before the 22nd regular investigator.

According to information reported by ERTnews, the nurse changed an important detail from her original police statement.

She had initially told police that she left the clinic at 4:15pm and did not know what had happened to Mazonakis.

During her testimony before the investigator, she reportedly said she actually left later, explaining that she had initially given the wrong time because she had no sense of time during the incident.

“I was in the doctor’s office when it all happened. Initially I said I left at 4:15pm because I had no sense of time. I left later,” she reportedly testified.

The nurse also described what she said was a scene of panic inside the clinic after the incident.

According to the same information, the doctor eventually called the employees into her office.

“We are all jointly responsible”

The witness also reportedly made a significant statement concerning the accused doctor.

She alleged that after Mazonakis was transferred from the emergency department, the doctor told staff:

“We are all jointly responsible.”

The nurse reportedly said she had no further communication with the accused doctor following the singer’s death.

Lawyer representing the clinic workers, Katerina Kosti, said the employees were providing investigators with information based on what they personally observed and where they were located during the critical period.

Investigation examines claim of sedation

Investigators are also examining another witness statement concerning an alleged administration of sedation to Mazonakis.

The testimony is being assessed alongside the statement reportedly made by the 56 year old detained doctor during her defence.

According to ERTnews, the doctor did not refer to administering sedation or another substance in her statement and is reported to deny giving Mazonakis any form of sedation.

Her lawyers have previously said they would avoid discussing the case through the media while the investigation remains underway, citing respect for the judicial process.

Defibrillator becomes key focus

Investigators are also examining a telephone call made during the critical moments to the company that supplied the clinic with a defibrillator.

George Adamopoulos, a representative of the medical equipment company, told ERTnews that the clinic initially called through a nurse before the accused doctor reportedly joined the conversation.

He said the call indicated that the defibrillator’s battery was being installed at that moment.

According to Adamopoulos, the machine had been purchased in July 2022 and had not previously been used.

He also said the call ended abruptly before he later heard a male voice thanking him.

The circumstances of the call are now part of the wider investigation into what happened at the clinic.

Hydrotherapy machine also under investigation

Another issue being examined is a hydrotherapy machine that had reportedly been present at the clinic.

Polyti Leondardou, president of the Medical Association of Athens’ Inspection Committee, told ERTnews that the machine had been recorded during an inspection of the clinic in November 2025.

However, she said the machine was no longer at the clinic the day after Mazonakis’ death.

According to Leondardou, Theodoropoulos had said the machine was broken and had been removed.

Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the removal of the equipment and the procedure associated with the hydrotherapy treatment.

More witness statements expected

The investigation is continuing with further testimony from employees at the clinic.

Another employee who did not provide a preliminary statement to police is expected to testify on Tuesday.

Additional employees are also expected to give evidence as investigators work to establish a clearer timeline of events during the critical hours surrounding Mazonakis’ treatment.

Authorities are continuing to assess the full body of evidence gathered as part of the investigation.
