Israel is reportedly examining how it could strike Turkish forces without triggering NATO’s collective defence provisions, as tensions between Jerusalem and Ankara continue to rise over Syria.
According to Israel Hayom, Israeli officials have been studying the scope of NATO’s Article 5 and reportedly concluded that while the provision protects Turkish territory, its application may be less straightforward when Turkish forces are deployed outside Turkey, including in Syria and the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.
Reports from i24NEWS and Yediot Ahronoth claim Israeli intelligence has also assessed that Turkey is preparing to send additional weapons and military equipment to Syria, potentially including advanced air defence systems.
The reports come as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly convened an emergency security cabinet meeting with senior defence and intelligence officials to discuss developments involving Turkey.
The reported examination of NATO’s treaty provisions highlights the seriousness with which Israel is allegedly assessing the possibility of a confrontation with Turkish forces.
Article 5 states that an armed attack against one NATO member is considered an attack against all. However, questions surrounding the precise circumstances in which the provision would apply to a member’s forces operating outside its territory could become highly significant in any potential Israel Turkey confrontation.
The situation is particularly sensitive in Syria, where both countries have military and strategic interests and where any direct clash could rapidly create a wider regional crisis.
Israel and Turkey are both important US partners, but Turkey’s membership in NATO adds another layer of diplomatic and military complexity to any potential Israeli action against Turkish forces.
If the reports are accurate, Israeli planners are therefore assessing not only Turkey’s military capabilities and intentions, but also the potential legal and alliance consequences of any strike.
The reported discussions underscore how rapidly the strategic relationship between Israel and Turkey is becoming more confrontational, particularly as Ankara considers a greater military role in Syria.
